Sleep Apnea Death
I have been searching and searching online on who actually died of apnea, not just as apnea might have something to do or the person has apnea when the person died. Reggie White died of a massive heart attack, he had apnea, but is apnea really the culprit to his demised – It was stated by his wife that he had apnea, and the media jumped the gun on that and those who are still doing sleep studies rode the ban wagon. So who have died you have known that was the cause of sleep apnea, not just might have caused by sleep apnea. I already know what apnea is all about from hearing it from doctors, literatures, online reasearch, yada yada yada. Do you know what I found? Interesting question. I am not aware of any reported cases of death due to apnea during sleep, in a patient with sleep apnea. This doesn't mean it can't happen. The main issue is that identifying a cause of death may be difficult, especially if there are no witnesses. Certain causes of death are more easily diagnosed during autopsy. These are generally diseases which result in structural changes, such as stroke, heart attack, trauma, bleeding, & cancer. Others, such as arrhythmias (and possibly sleep apnea), may occur suddenly and not cause anatomic damage. Most hospitals have special units or floors equipped with 24-hr patient monitoring (e. G. ICUs). In these cases, it may be possible to note the exact time of death. However, hospitalized patients tend to be sicker and have other illnesses. If they die, it is usually more likely to be due to the more active disease such as infection, heart attack, etc. As an aside, when doctors fill out death certificates, they actually try to describe the process which ultimately led to the patient's death. For instance, they may write: Cause of death: heart attack Due to, or a consequence of: coronary artery disease Due to, or a consequence of: diabetes So that diabetes was the underlying cause of death in this patient who died from a heart attack. Therefore, if a physician was confident enough in his diagnosis, he could theoretically certify that the underlying cause of death was OSA (i. E. Which ultimately lead to the poor soul's fatal car accident).
Sleep Apnea Death is addressed by Dr. Steven Y. Park. He discusses sleep statistics including the increased mortality risk posed by untreated sleep apnea.
The most popular explanation for SIDS is that some babies have severe enough sleep apnea that they cannot breathe, yet their brains are not developed enough to wake them up. Kind of like the same way that a young child will sleep through a bed wetting.
