Snore Cure
Hi, My darling husband is a great person but when he lies on his back he snores and I get worried because I have heard that the lack of breathing that they have can harm them and cause strokes and heart attacks. He snores only when on his back and I usually try to gently roll him over or pat his arm or something to get him to draw breath. I lie half awake and this of course leaves me weary but I am concerned more for his health. Our family doctor has been told and does not seem bothered by this. I would like to know if anyone has had any experience with helping their partner so it does not cause them harm. If anything awful happened to him, I would be devastated. I love him very much. Any useful links online would be appreciated. We live in Australia so if you have some local help that you can mention, herbal medicine or anything, I would like to know. Thanks so much. Cheers Lisa. Well, I have your answer right here. Snoring is due to obstruction of the back of the tongue over the airway. When he his supine there is vibration of the posterior tongue. If it obstructs completely the breathing stops temporarily. This is called sleep apnea. The snoring nasal strips and sprays do not work…. There are some sprays you can purchase that open up the area in the back part of throat more and helps stop snoring. Sometimes these things work, sometimes they do not. The bottom line is you need to get your sleep and it is not your fault he snores; neither is it his.
If he could be talked into sleeping on his sides that would be helpful, but I do understand that once asleep that may be difficult to maintain.
There is actually surgery that can be done but that surely would be the very last choice of options.
Another option and this isn't much fun, would be for you to do your sleeping in different quarters. Doesn't sound very appealing but a good nights sleep just may be worth it. This is what my grandmother did and it worked for them.
Oh yeah, they have these nose attachments things that people claim work on snoring. I think concerning those, it would be a case by case issue.
snoring while laying on your back is caused by the throat muscles relaxing and the tounge kind of falling back over the air way. the only thing that may be done is to have him sleep on his side. dont worry too much though. he'll wake up and move if he cannot breath. if its really bad you may want to look up sleep apnea. its a severe version of pretty much the same thing. let his doc know if it concerns you to the point to where you’re loosing sleep. his doc may want to do a sleep study on him to view if he does in fact have sleep apnea
